Games for Math Class
Games I Designed
Function Battleship- the PreCalc version of this game teaches students fluency in using the vocabulary of increasing, decreasing, concave up, concave down, domains of definition, and limits to +/- infinity. The calculus version of this game does the same but in the language of derivatives.
Function Battleship-- Pre-Calculus
Function Battleship-- Calculus
The Great Function Race- the purpose of this race is to get students to be able to figure out the equation of a linear or exponential function given a table of values.
Other Games I Use in the Classroom
Winning Strategies- this is a fun activity pushing students to creatively try to figure out mathematical winning strategies for various simple games.
Board of Pair-of-Dice-- a simple 2-player game you can teach in minutes in which students discover the probabilities of each possible outcome when rolling two dice and adding the results in a non-tedious way. This is a good set-up for calculating the probability of each outcome. Students need a pair of dice and seven tokens aside from the sheet here printed out.
Kyboi-- another simple 2-player game in which students roll between one and five dice to either add to or subtract from their score. A good exploration of the ideas of expected outcome and standard deviation. Students need a pencil and paper to keep track of their score, and five dice per game.
